Surface Surfaces
A search on Bestbuy.com turns up 18 laptop/tablet/slates that run Windows 8. Amazon.com has some fly-by-night subvendors offering discounted units of dubious origin, but according to releases from Microsoft, Surface has surfaced in 27 retail and 34 holiday stores in the US and Canada. Its also available at http://www.microsoftstore.com in several countries.
The press release announcing the availability of Surface says that Microsoft Corp. today announced that its new PC, Microsoft Surface, is now available
New PC? You might be thinking of Surface as a tablet. Later in the announcement Microsoft explains that:
Surface represents an extension of the Windows experience, letting customers work, play and connect with others. From its ultralight durable casing, integrated kickstand and Touch Cover, which allow customers to be productive anywhere, to a full-sized USB port, 16:9 widescreen, high-definition display and 22-degree angle that make it optimal for viewing and sharing content easily, Surface lets customers seamlessly transition between entertainment and creation.
Sounds pretty much as powerful as most laptop PCs.Competing with others in the consumer segment, the Surface Touch Cover comes in multiple colors, including black, white, magenta, cyan and red. It runs Windows RT, the Windows version optimized for the low-power-consumption AMD processor. Sounds like a tablet.
Tablet or PC, it doesn't really matter.
The important thing is that Microsofts new entry into an already crowded market for tablet and other user-access devices is slim, the way users today want it to be. Its bright and easy-to-use, and connects into the network handily. In a breathtaking sweep, Microsoft has established its place as the only manufacturer whose tablet/PC, phone, media player and other device all share the same interface, making it easy for users to put their content in their SkyDrive and access it readily from whichever device they have available.
