Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor: Are You Ready?

Don't buy a new PC or even upgrade your memory until you've downloaded and run this handy migration utility.

Before you go out and spend money on new computer hardware, download Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and you may be pleasantly surprised to find that your current computer is ready for the operating system upgrade.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is an easy-to-use application that is designed to help you determine whether your current PC will be able to run Windows 7. If your PC was up to the task of running Vista, chances are you don’t need new hardware.

The utility checks memory, processor speed, storage, and other hardware components, then inventories and examines all of the software applications currently running on your computer.

Microsoft advises users to be sure all devices, including external mass storage, scanners, and printers (connected by USB or other interface), be plugged in and running before launching the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, so it can perform a comprehensive inventory.  It will scan all hardware, peripheral devices, and all installed software, then present a comprehensive inventory report (a boon for IT admins) and recommend the best path for upgrading the OS license to Windows 7.

Of course, Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor runs on both Windows XP and Windows Vista, as you would expect.  Use it to figure out whether you need a new PC, a memory upgrade, or whether you’re fine as-is. You could be just a license-upgrade away from reaping all the benefits of Windows 7.
