Virtualization--it's not just a buzzword anymore. It's a bona fide solution for organizations looking to migrate to Windows 7 while maintaining compatibility with legacy software. It's also a complex topic. That's why Windows for Your Business blogger Gavriella Shuster took time to write about simplifying desktop virtualization, which offers a "virtualization roadmap" derived from discussions held at the recent Microsoft Management Summit and Desktop Virtualization Hour. Here, for example, are two "core tenants" (I think she means "tenets") of Microsoft's desktop virtualization approach:
    • Implement a desktop virtualization solution that gives you a comprehensive, consistent management experience and facilitates a centralized way to manage distributed and centralized desktops.
    • Determine a common way of integrating and leveraging all the different forms of virtualization--desktop virtualization should encompass application, hardware, VDI and session virtualization.
Shuster goes on to hit several other virtualization highlights, like how to get the highest ROI, evaluate the value of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in your organization, and determine if upcoming client hypervisor technology ("a virtualization layer that runs directly on the hardware") might be beneficial. (I know, it's a funny name, one that just begs for jokes. "What do you call a supervisor who's had too much coffee? A hypervisor!") There's some good data here, and it's gratifying to hear bluntly honest claims like, "We think VDI is good for all organizations but not necessarily all users because the user experience and application performance is directly dependent on network connectivity."
