IE8 App Compatibility.jpg Application compatibility is always a concern when you're migrating to a new OS--or a new Web browser. If you're thinking of making the move from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8 (a smart, long-overdue move, in my humble opinion), it behooves you to investigate app compatibility first. Microsoft just made this a lot easier by releasing the Internet Explorer 8 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals, an Excel spreadsheet with compatibility info for more than 150 programs. Specifically, for each app it shows version numbers, company name, URL, compatibility status, and a link to the corresponding "support statement" for the app. (According to Microsoft, compatibility is "based on public support statements from software publishers, or statements made to Microsoft from software publishers.") Of course, if you discover an app or two that's not compatible or hasn't made the list, fear not: There are many ways to work around the issue. Most of them involve virtualization solutions like Windows 7's XP Mode. The list is free and available for download now. Follow ITMigrationZone on Twitter Facebook friend badge.png
