Windows Server 2008 R2 Migration

Migrating to Microsoft SharePoint 2010

One of many reasons to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 is the ability to adopt SharePoint 2010 as a collaboration and content management platform smoothly.

There’s a large and growing population of user communities who are or are planning to migrate to Microsoft SharePoint 2010, cited by Microsoft executives as Microsoft’s fastest-growing product ever.

There’s the community of users of older versions of SharePoint, going back as far, in many cases, as MOSS 2003.  In addition to the server upgrade, these users will have significant application transition issues to consider.

There’s the community of users who are considering moving to SharePoint Online, but will have to wait until code-base parity is achieved and all modifications are possible in the cloud.

Then there’s the community of users who want to build greater business intelligence capabilities but have not yet turned to SharePoint.  They may be using other BI platforms, or they may not.  In coming posts here on  Migration Expert Zone, we’ll talk about how this group can best approach migrating to a robust BI platform.

In this post, I wanted to point those planning a SharePoint upgrade at an excellent set of resources available from Microsoft TechNet called “Upgrade and Migration for SharePoint Server 2010.” This site provides excellent guidelines for planning, preparing for, and performing the upgrade process and migration of applications.  Right from the start, the site presents a three-step “getting started” approach – Determine your approach, read the overview of the process, and then review upgrade best practices.

The site features a tremendous wealth of insight into what’s new in the upgrade, supported upgrade paths, how various features and services are affected by the upgrade, testing, and troubleshooting.  It also offers up worksheets and checklists to help with the process, plus case studies detailing successful upgrades.

Upgrading from any major platform to a new version is never a trivial activity.  This set of SharePoint migration resources will help companies make the decision if and when to upgrade, and then help them execute.
