David Chernicoff at ZDNet has called attention to a potentially serious issue that can plague Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 users. Apparently, some users have encountered 'random freezes,' where the PC locks up for a couple of minutes and then returns to normal, or where it requires a hard reboot in order to regain control. Microsoft describes it this way:
A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 stops responding randomly. Applications or services that are running on the computer stop working correctly. Additionally, you cannot log on to the computer by using the remote desktop connection utility. This issue occurs because of a deadlock condition between the Lsass.exe process, the Redirected Drive Buffering Subsystem (Rdbss.sys) driver, and the Winsock kernel.Random lock-ups can be alarming, because you don't know whether it's an OS problem, a malware attack, a hardware issue on the motherboard or the hard drive, or even a faulty power supply. It's a relief to know that Microsoft is aware of this issue and has issued a hotfix for it. The fix will also be included in Service Pack 1 of both Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. Judging from the comments on Chernicoff's story, many users haven't encountered this problem at all, but if they have, the hotfix does restore good working order. Have you run into this problem while using W7 or WS08? Has applying this fix helped solve the issue? Are you waiting for SP1 to be released before adopting either W7 or WS08? Sound off in our comments section!
