If you're in charge of administering one or more Windows Server 2008 R2 servers, you know that having the right tools at your disposal can mean the difference between life-is-good and why-oh-why-is-this-happening-to-me.
TechRepublic's Brien Posey rounded up 10 Windows Server tools he considers must-haves. The list includes mostly Microsoft-made stuff, but there is one third-party tool: the open-source Server Core Configurator.
Any time you perform a server core installation of Windows Server 2008, you must perform certain post installation tasks before the server is ready to use. Microsoft offers some PowerShell scripts, but performing the initial configuration process from a command line can be tedious. The Server Core Configurator simplifies the provisioning process by providing a simple GUI you can use for the initial configuration.Score! Other essentials on the list include File Server Migration Wizard, ADSI Edit, and Best Practices Analyzer (which we've covered before)--all great stuff. Know of any other must-have server-admin tools Posey left off the list? Name 'em in the comments!
