A while back we showed you how to get legacy software to work in Vista by tapping the operating system's Compatibility Mode. If that doesn't work, however, you'll need to investigate an enterprise virtualization solution. Here's one straight outta Redmond: Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization, or MED-V for short. (Yeah, we know: Sounds like something a hospital would use.) In case you're not familiar with it:
MED-V allows IT Pros to easily create, deliver and centrally manage virtualized Windows XP or 2000 environments to run legacy applications on Windows Vista desktops.
Needless to say, plenty of executives and IT managers have balked at Vista owing to concerns over application compatibility. A tool like MED-V should allow you to deploy Vista without the need to first test and migrate critical legacy apps. MED-V is currently in beta, with a final 1.0 release due in the second quarter. You can find out more about MED-V, and how to obtain it free of charge, at the Official MDOP Blog. Meanwhile, if you want to see MED-V in action, check out this introductory video.
